Looking at my web logs and getting scared into regular updating WordPress
and
its modules and its back-end database has convinced me that I do not need all
that complexity for a handful of posts per year.
Despite the excellent feedback I have received (sadly, mostly from WordPress comment
spammers), I decided to simplify and move this small site to the static site
generator Hugo that I use for my other sites.
This may unfortunately break some bookmarked URLs to previous posts, but I doubt this will affect too many as most visiting humans should find older posts rather quickly. In case you should spot a problem - please let me know.
The format - in particular the categorisation, commenting and RSS feed - will still
improve, as I understand Hugo better. The page loading performance
should already have improved by factors (from several hundred ms
locally to
only a few ms
) since the static html removed the latency of database accesses and
also reduced the size of the HTML documents that are shipped to your client browser.
So, take this is a tiny contribution to reduce my carbon footprint and your HTML bloat..
